Dear Dr. Lindeman,
My daughter has developed a pink, itchy rash. What is it?
If the rash is raised pink, itchy spots with pale centers that look like mosquito bites she has hives. Hives range in size from 1/2 inch to several inches across. They often change size, shape and even location.
Hives are an allergic reaction to a food, viral infection, insect bite and many other sources. 90% of the time, however, we never figure out what causes hives.
Home Treatment
- Antihistamines: Benadryl (the generic is diphenhydramine) is the best choice for home treatment. Proper Benadryl dosing is indicated on the packaging. Give Benadryl 4 times per day until the hives are completely gone for 24 hours. The chief side effect is drowsiness, although a minority of children becomes more irritable than drowsy.
- Itching: Rub very itchy areas with ice. A cool bath may relieve itching as well.
- Avoidance: Assuming you can identify the cause, avoidance is the mainstay of hive prevention.
