Dear Dr. Lindeman,
My daughter is complaining of an ear ache. Could it be an ear infection?
Actually, not all ear pain is caused by a bacterial infection that requires antibiotics. Other causes include:
- Infections with a virus
- Blockage in the ear canal
- Fluid or pressure in the middle ear
- Teething
- Jaw or throat problems
When ear pain is caused by a bacterial infection, over half of these infections go away on their own. In other words, not all bacterial ear infections need antibiotics in order to get better.
Home Treatment
- Pain medicine: Antibiotics are not painkillers - never were, never will be! Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) given in proper doses are the best oral medicine for ear pain. The doctor may also prescribe painkilling drops that go directly in the ear.
- Positioning: Keep the child's head elevated if possible. If your child is older than two, use two pillows!
Call us immediately at 508-655-9699 if
- Your child develops a stiff neck
- You believe your child is getting worse
